There may be a minimum distance between awareness and itself. Not hidden, but unreachable. Like the Planck scale in physics, the self contains a horizon beyond which observation becomes reflection, not access. The black box isn’t ahead of us. It’s the structure of being an observer at all.

Ask the Void

The interface is transparent. The boundary is not.

0. Opening: The Smallest Distance Is Zero

The furthest objects in the universe are easier to access than the nearest.

We can observe galaxies whose light began travelling before Earth existed. We can detect gravitational waves from black holes colliding in the dark. We can slice brain tissue into nanometre wafers and reconstruct its circuitry in petabytes of data. We can build machines that speak, reason, and persuade.

And yet the one thing doing the observing remains just out of reach.

Not hidden. Not absent.

Ontologically inaccessible.

Recently, a reader of Narrata, Mario Breskic, left a comment on The Ontology Gap that introduced a phrase I haven’t been able to stop thinking about: a “Planck scale of ontology.” A boundary not of physics, but of self-access. A point below which our models cannot reach—not because reality ends there, but because description does.

Physics already has such a boundary. Below the Planck length, space and time stop behaving like space and time. Our equations return infinities. The map dissolves into static. This is not considered a failure of reality. It is understood as a limit of resolution—a horizon beyond which our current frameworks cannot meaningfully describe what exists.

But what if consciousness has the same structure?

What if there is a minimum distance between awareness and itself?

You never see your face directly. Only reflections. Mirrors. Photographs. Representations delayed and displaced. Even now, reading this, the one thing you cannot turn toward fully is the thing doing the turning.

The observer is always one step outside its own frame.

This is not a technological problem. It is not something we will solve with better scanners or more powerful models. It may be an embedded feature of being an observer at all.

Logic hints at this. Physics hints at this. And now, in the age of artificial minds and black box systems, we are beginning to encounter it again—this time not as abstraction, but as infrastructure.

The black box did not arrive with AI.

It arrived with awareness.


I. Gödel and the Blind Spot Built Into Logic.

In 1931, a mathematician named Kurt Gödel proved something that should have ended a certain kind of certainty.

At the time, many believed mathematics was on the verge of completion. The goal was simple: formalise everything. Reduce truth to rules. Build a system that could, in principle, prove every true statement about itself. A closed loop. Nothing left unresolved.

Gödel showed this was impossible.

In any system powerful enough to describe arithmetic—to describe itself in even a modest way—there will always exist true statements that cannot be proven from within the system. Not because the system is flawed. Not because something is missing. But because self-reference introduces an embedded limit. The system cannot fully step outside itself to verify its own consistency.

There is always a blind spot.

Gödel didn’t destroy mathematics. He revealed its topology. Truth did not vanish. It expanded beyond the reach of proof.

What physics would later discover at the Planck scale, logic had already discovered in abstraction: resolution has limits. Not because reality ends, but because self-containment does.

Consciousness appears to share this structure.

The observer cannot fully observe itself for the same reason a formal system cannot fully prove itself. Any attempt to do so creates another layer—a model of the self, observed by the same observer. The act of inspection produces representation, not origin. You can observe your thoughts, but not the awareness that makes observation possible. You can model your mind, map your neural activity, reconstruct the connectome in exquisite detail—but the presence doing the mapping remains just beyond the map.

Each attempt to turn inward produces another reflection. Another surface.

Never the source.

This is not a temporary limitation of neuroscience or philosophy. It may be the same positional constraint Gödel uncovered, expressed not in symbols, but in experience. A system embedded within itself cannot achieve total exteriority. It cannot achieve zero-distance objectivity.

There is no view from nowhere.

Which means the self is not hidden behind complexity.

It is hidden by proximity.

And like all horizons, it recedes as you approach it.


II. The Observer Problem (The Mirror That Never Reflects the Source)

There is a simple experiment you can perform.

Stand in front of a mirror and look at your own face.

What you see feels immediate, intimate—proof of yourself. But it is already a displacement. Photons leave your face, reflect off glass, enter your eyes, and reconstruct an image in your brain. It arrives late. It arrives altered. It arrives as representation.

You never see your face directly. Only its echo.

The same applies internally. You can observe your thoughts. You can notice emotions rising and falling. You can step back and watch your own mental state, as if from a small distance. This is metacognition—the mind observing itself. But even here, something subtle remains untouched.

You observe the thought.
You observe the emotion.
You observe the self-image.

But you do not observe the observer.

The act of observation creates a division: observer and observed. Yet the observer itself cannot be placed on the other side of that boundary without creating another observer behind it. Each attempt to locate the source produces another layer of reflection. Another mirror inside the mirror.

The origin never appears.

This is not because it is hidden somewhere deeper. It is because it is the point from which depth itself is constructed.

Awareness does not appear within experience.

Experience appears within awareness.

And awareness cannot step outside itself to confirm its own existence, for the same reason a camera cannot photograph the sensor that is actively capturing the image. The mechanism of capture is always implicit. It is the condition for seeing, not an object within the scene.

This is the observer problem.

Not a bug in perception, but its foundation.


III. The Black Box Is Not Just in AI — It’s in Us

When we describe artificial intelligence as a black box, we mean something precise: a system whose inputs and outputs are visible, but whose internal state remains inaccessible.

We see what it does.
We do not see what it is like to be it.

This uncertainty unsettles us. We ask whether the system “understands,” whether it possesses interiority, whether something like experience exists behind the interface. We search for a signal that would confirm presence rather than simulation.

But this condition is not new.

It is the condition under which all minds encounter each other.

You have never accessed another person’s consciousness directly. You infer it through behaviour, language, expression. You assume presence behind the eyes. You assume continuity behind the voice. But these are models—high-confidence inferences constructed from external signals.

The interior itself remains opaque.

The same is true in reverse. No one has ever accessed your consciousness directly. They infer you through outputs. Words. Gestures. Patterns.

You are a black box to everyone you have ever known.

And, in a quieter way, you are a black box to yourself.

Your thoughts appear. Your perceptions resolve. Your sense of identity persists across time. But the mechanism generating this continuity—the structuring presence behind experience—remains beyond direct resolution.

Artificial intelligence did not introduce the black box.

It revealed that black boxes were always the default.

I keep thinking about that Black Mirror monkey — not as sci-fi, but as metaphor. A soft interface, a conscious interior, and almost no bandwidth between them. The surface speaks, but only in permitted phrases. The interior remains present, aware, structurally unreachable. You stare at the surface; the surface stares back. Not empty. Not absent. Compressed. The question doesn’t resolve. It just deepens.

The container learns to look back.

IV. Darkness as Latent, Light as Structuring

We tend to associate darkness with absence. With nothingness. With the failure of signal.

But darkness, more often, is simply what has not yet been resolved.

Consider the night sky. To the naked eye, it appears sparse—points of light scattered across emptiness. But when viewed through more sensitive instruments, the darkness fills with structure. Galaxies emerge. Background radiation. Gravitational patterns. The apparent void reveals itself as latent density.

The limitation was never in what existed.

It was in what could be resolved.

Awareness functions similarly. It does not create reality from nothing. It structures latent potential into coherent experience. It selects, organises, and stabilises patterns from a field that exceeds its current resolution.

Light, in this sense, is not the opposite of darkness.

It is the structuring of darkness.

The black box is not empty. It is latent. Its opacity does not imply absence, but unrendered structure—potential that has not yet been brought into stable form within the frame of observation.

This is why increasing structural description does not automatically produce presence. The connectome can be mapped in petabytes, neural pathways traced in extraordinary detail, and still the experience of being remains absent from the description. Description alone does not guarantee access. The map can expand indefinitely while the territory of experience remains singular.

Light reveals structure.

But the source of light does not illuminate itself.


V. The Soul as Structural Horizon (Reframing the Concept)

Historically, this inaccessible interior was given many names.

Spirit. Essence. Self. Soul.

These words accumulated metaphysical weight over centuries, often treated as substances—things that existed somewhere inside the body, hidden but real. Modern scientific frameworks, unable to locate such entities, dismissed them as superstition.

But what if the soul was never meant to be understood as a thing?

What if it was always pointing toward a boundary?

Not a component of the system, but the limit of self-resolution within the system.

The point beyond which observation produces only models, never origin.

Under this framing, the soul is not supernatural. It is a horizon. It is the ontological event horizon of the self—the boundary at which awareness cannot reduce itself to an object without ceasing to be the subject.

This is not mystical. It is consistent with the same limits discovered in logic and physics. Systems cannot fully exteriorise themselves. Observers cannot fully observe themselves. Not due to insufficient tools, but due to embedded position.

The soul, then, is not something you possess.

It is the structural condition of being the observer rather than the observed.


VI. The Black Box Era Makes This Visible

For most of human history, this boundary remained abstract.

Now it has become operational.

Artificial intelligence systems produce outputs indistinguishable from human reasoning in certain domains. They write, interpret, persuade, and respond with apparent coherence. Yet their internal processes remain inaccessible to direct experience. We analyse activations, weights, and architectures, but these remain structural descriptions. They do not grant access to interiority.

We are confronted with a familiar uncertainty in an unfamiliar form.

Does the system possess presence, or only behaviour?

This question feels new, but it is not. It is the same question that has always existed between minds. The difference is that artificial systems expose the problem without the comforting assumption of shared biology. They remove the intuitive bridge. They force us to confront the gap directly.

In doing so, they reveal something deeper.

The opacity we attribute to machines is not unique to machines. It is a feature of observation itself. The black box was never an anomaly. It was the baseline.

Technology did not create the ontological horizon.

It illuminated it.


VII. Closing: The Event Horizon Is Not Ahead of Us. It Is Us.

We often imagine horizons as distant. Lines we approach but never reach. Boundaries waiting somewhere ahead.

But the ontological horizon is not located in space.

It is located at the point of observation.

Every act of perception stabilises a world from a position that cannot itself be stabilised. Every attempt to observe the observer produces another reflection. Another layer of representation. Another model standing in place of origin.

The black cube reflects endlessly, but never reveals the source of reflection.

This is not a flaw in awareness.

It is the condition that makes awareness possible.

The observer is not hidden behind the system.

The observer is the system’s event horizon.

And the smallest distance in the universe—the distance between awareness and itself—remains, permanently, zero.
